Poem: Springtime in Auckland

I find myself veering off course,
taking the scenic route
(a tiki tour).

Newborn lambs bounce from
abundant spring grass
in the paddocks alongside
the road to Bethells.

Ducklings play follow the leader
in La Rosa Street, near the schools,
as if to charm the children
as they charm me.

Childhood memories flood me as I watch
calves graze on clover and buttercups,
ignoring me as I pass on Candia Drive.

A laugh bubbles out of me as
I watch ungainly baby pukeko
totter on their tall red legs in
the verges lining the Northern Motorway.

These are the moments that are worth
making time for.
